CWU and Diabetes
Almost 21 million adults and children in the US have diabetes 9.7 million are women, many of whom do not even know they have diabetes.
Diabetes is the 5th deadliest disease in the US there is no cure.
The American Diabetes Association is working to improve the lives of women with, and at risk for diabetes and has cited several areas where help is needed.
Church Women United can play a unique role in spreading the message about Women and Diabetes.
In the May meeting of the Church Women United Board of Directors they voted to name Women and Diabetes as our newest national focus. We can aid in raising awareness of the impact diabetes on women and children and be influential in the education of policy makers and others about the importance of the topic.
Women have a unique role within the family setting. We are gatekeepers for family health and care decisions.
The CWU diabetes program will provide several opportunities for intergenerational activities to address this issue. The plan is to combine service projects, recipes, food cards, cooking demonstrations, shopping trips, games, place mats, coloring books, bookmarks, childrenís backpacks with healthy snacks (for families where parents are unemployed), litanies, prayer cards, table blessings, and much more. This exciting new program will launched in the fall of 2009 ñ watch for details.
