Dear Sisters of the Common Council, Denominational Representatives, and Local Unit Presidents,

Each unit of Church Women United should have a woman who sits on your board with responsibility for offering the opportunity to your membership to take part in making, displaying, and using your Ribbon of Tangible Hope segments locally. And, as you are moved to do so, joining with other groups within your community, state, and the nation.

Your Ribbon of Tangible Hope Keywoman may be a person with that sole responsibility. In smaller units, the Ecumenical Action Chair may have the Ribbon of Tangible Hope as part of her portfolio. In any case, she should have the ability to inspire the women of your unit to create a segment from the following instructions:

  • Choose a yard (square) of any color with a sturdy fabric, double it, and hem it with a double seam all around. Finished size is ½ yard high by 1 yard wide.
  • On this panel, sew, paint, write, embroider appliqué©, weave, knit, tie dye, or use crayons or ornaments of any kind to express what you most love about the world, and want to protect from human-made disasters.
  • Sew a 9-inch piece of ribbon or bias tape to each corner so the panels may be easily tied together.
  • Write your name, address, and any message on the back of your panel.
  • When it comes to displaying your Ribbon or the individual segments, your Keywoman should be alert to what is going on not only in CWU, but also in the community. Together you may decide to join 200 Domestic Violence protesters, as did the women in Tucson, AZ, in the accompanying photo.

The Keywoman should keep a supply of Ribbon of Tangible Hope brochures on hand for distribution at all meetings and “ribbonings”. The unit president should have the camera-ready master for making them. If not, contact Martha DeWarf at the address listed on next page. The brochures are best printed on blue paper, the liturgical color for Hope. Be sure there is a contact listed on the inside page.

In the ChurchWoman News (which replaced The ChurchWoman magazine) you have seen several ways in which your sister units have displayed their Ribbon of Tangible Hope. They have “ribboned” with Domestic Violence, Peace, Hunger, and Immigration Groups to show their support for the ideals we all have. Be alert for opportunities at the national level such as the annual 9/11 “ribboning” in New York City at the UN and World Trade Center each September. You will read about them in the ChurchWoman News with plenty of time to make plans individually and as a unit.

You might incorporate any of the many hymns of Hope that appear in all of our hymnals, as well as poems and bits of scripture in your regular programming for celebrations and forums.

Another source is the Church Women United website at: www.churchwomen.org. Under “Events”, you will find information under the website: www.theribboninternational.org for news from the international community.

I offer the following article for you to share in your unit’s newsletter:

What have you done with your Ribbon of Tangible Hope lately? Yes, you made a lovely segment for the Ribbon of Tangible Hope. Yes, it expresses all your yearnings for peace, humanity, and the environment. You put yourself and your dreams into it. It is very personal and very important to you.

Now, what do you do with it? Is it still in the drawer in your sewing room? Or perhaps you took it to a meeting of your unit and hung it up for the program, and then it moved to someone else’s drawer waiting to be used at some other place or another time. But when? Where?

Well, have I got news for you! Wait no longer. Bring out that beautiful piece of fabric expressing your hopes and dreams. Put it together with those of some of your sisters. And get out there onto the street corner where it can be seen and admired. Tell our story to the world: CHURCH WOMEN UNITED HAS HOPE-TANGIBLE HOPE, hope that comes from faith that God hears our prayers and dreams of our community, our country, and our world. It’s a marvelous opportunity to share CWU with strangers that stop to ask what you’re doing. Give them a brochure. Invite them to join us. Welcome them when they come! We’re not the only ones looking for hope. Be generous. Get out there and share.

REMEMBER: A segment is not a Ribbon of Tangible Hope until it is tied to two others!

Please share with me what you have done with your Ribbon of Tangible Hope, and contact me if I can be of help to you. Vaya con Dios!

    Sincerely in His service,

    Martha R. DeWarf
