Press Release

CHURCH WOMEN UNITED is the nation's largest ecumenical Christian women's organization with 1200 local units and fifty state chapters. CWU is a racially, culturally and theologically inclusive ecumenical Christian women's movement. For sixty-four years the organization has been dedicated to promoting diversity in a more inclusive society, providing better access for all to quality health care, and working for economic justice.

This holiday season we join with interfaith groups and nonprofit organizations to express our concern about the national budget and the growing divide between the wealthy and poor in this country. Congress is facing a decision about whether or not to cut vital services like food stamps and child care from low income, working families. We are concerned about the expensive tax cuts being considered.

Today we have asked churches to ring their bells as we stand in solidarity with people who are praying in the nation's capital and across this country on behalf of the poor. We ask our legislators to provide for accessible programs and services that help all our citizens.
